Chapter 8. Registering Transports

Transports form a bridge between Jabber and other (legacy) networks. By using transport, you can talk to people on those legacy networks. There are currently transports for MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ and GaduGadu. There are also transports that are able to connect to IRC and there are even transports to keep you up to date by means of RSS feeds!

Most public Jabber servers have one or more transports at the moment. Still, it's easier if your own server has the desired transports. In that case it's easier for you to register the transport.

In this example we'll add an MSN transport in order to be able to talk to our contacts on the MSN network. Other transports, like AIM and Yahoo, can be added in the same way.

[Note] Note

You need a valid login name for the network (transport) you want to add. In the case of MSN, you'll need an MSN Passport (or a Hotmail address).

Choose Tools, Transports. In the next window you'll see all the transports that are installed on the server you are currently using. Click once on the transport you want to add. Pandion will download the necessary data for the transport. Fill in the form with the login name and the password of the network. After you have confirmed this, the transport is added to your contact list. Your contacts of that network are automatically added to your Jabber contact list. Depending on the number of your contacts, this can take a while.

After the contacts are added to your contact list, you can talk to them as if they were using Jabber. Left-click the contact to open a conversation window.

You can also use transports from another server. In that case, go to the Transports window. Then click the Other transport... button. Give the complete name of the transport that you want to add. You can then add the transport in the same way you added the transport on the same server.

[Note] Note

Some transports are unstable. Most of the time the legacy network is the culprit, sometimes it's the transport itself. Choose a transport on another server in the latter case.
